If you unfollow someone on Instagram, they’ll be removed from the people you follow, and you will no longer see their posts on your Instagram feed. Alternatively, if you mute someone, that person will still be under the people you follow, but you won’t see their Posts / Stories until you unmute them. Those are two separate options, by the way, you can mute either their Posts or Stories, or both. We’ll explain everything one step at a time, and you’ll also find plenty of screenshots below.
How to mute or unfollow someone on Instagram
When you’re ready, open up your Instagram app, and make sure you’re logged in. Then tap the search (magnifying) icon at the bottom.
A Search bar will appear at the top, tap it.
You’ll be asked to enter a name of a person / business. Simply enter a name you’d like to unfollow or mute, so that we can proceed.
As you start typing, suggestions will pop up below the search bar. Once the one you want pops up, simply choose it.
In this example, we opened the official Champions League page on Instagram, just to show you the procedure. You’ll notice the ‘Following’ icon on that page, as I’m following it with my personal account. Tap that icon.
A pop-up menu will appear, with a handful of options. Both ‘Mute’ and ‘Unfollow’ options are listed here. Let’s talk about Unfollow first, If you tap that option, you’ll start following the said account, and that’ll be that.
Alternatively, if you choose the ‘Mute’ option, another menu will appear. Tap it.
As you can see, there are two options in the ‘Mute’ menu. You can choose either to mute ‘Posts’ or ‘Stories’ for said person / account. Do note that Instagram won’t let them know you’ve muted their content. It will stay muted until you manually unmute it.
That’s basically everything you need to know about unfollowing / muting someone’s account on Instagram.
