The OV1 picks up the pieces of the Essential Ph-1

The Essential Ph-1 (or Essential Phone) went down as one of the most interesting phones in 2017, but it wasn’t for all good reasons. Andy Rubin, the creator of the Android operating system, developed that phone on the grounds that Android had become too saturated and bloated. However, aside from having very few pre-installed apps and the first notched display, nothing else really stood out about that phone. The Essential Ph-1 crashed and burned, but a company by the name of OSOM wants to pick up the pieces. The company was founded by ex-Essential employees who want a 2nd crack at bringing a phone to life. The company Essential was bought by Carl Pei who then turned it into Nothing. So, OSOM is a separate entity from the original company.

OSOM gave us some new details on the OV1

According to 9To5Google, the folks at OSOM just shared some details on the OV1. It gave us both good news and not-so-good news. Firstly, the phone will launch at a later date than originally stated. Instead of launching in Q3 of 2022, the phone will launch in Q4. That’s a difference of a couple of months, and that could be crucial. Q4 is around the time the Pixel 7 will most likely launch, also, the latest iPhone would have been long launched. This means that there will be some additional competition for the OV1 to combat. However, there’s a good reason why OSOM delayed the phone: the SoC. The company stated that it’s going to have a newer Snapdragon 8 chip in it. This means that it won’t need to use the older Snapdragon hardware. The fact it’ll be using a more powerful chipset points to a higher price tag, so we’ll have to keep that in mind. The OV1 won’t come with a charger in the box, but it will have an interesting charger cord. The phone will focus primarily on security and privacy. Hence, the cord will be able to disable date transfer when the phone is plugged into a computer. It will physically retract the pins on the cord that are meant for transferring data. Rounding out these new details, the OV1 will have dual-SIM support.
